Thursday, August 9, 2012 - 16:50 in Health & Medicine

Harvard announced today that it will create a varsity women’s rugby team, to begin play in the 2013-14 season. The squad will be the 21st varsity sport for women and the 42nd in all, making Harvard the nation’s leader in both areas. Harvard becomes the first Ivy League institution to sponsor a varsity rugby program. Previously, as a women’s rugby club that began in 1982, the team won two national championships (1998, 2011).
