A ‘Pippin’ of a night
Diane Paulus, artistic director at the American Repertory Theater (ART), took home the coveted Tony Award for best direction of a musical Sunday night for her restaging of the 1970s musical “Pippin,” originally by Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson. The revival, which the ART premiered and which received 10 Tony Award nominations, earned three other top prizes: best revival of a musical, best performance by a featured actress in a musical for Andrea Martin, who plays Pippin’s grandmother Berthe; and best performance by a lead actress in a musical for Patina Miller, the Leading Player, a role originated by Ben Vereen, who took home a 1973 Tony for his performance.
