Bird rehab gives young pelicans a second chance

Inexperienced fledglings look in the wrong places -- like fishermen -- for food and end up starving until rescue shelters come along. Emerging from dog crates facing the open ocean, eight rehabilitated brown pelicans padded down a Cabrillo Beach boat ramp Friday on absurdly short legs, wings flapping hard to gain lift as they rose into the air.
