Britton Chance dies at 97, pioneer in study of ultrafast reactions in human biology

The molecular biologist's early studies helped lay the groundwork for magnetic resonance imaging of humans. He was also an accomplished sailor, winning the gold medal in yachting in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.Molecular biologist Britton Chance who combined an expertise in electronics and automation with a knowledge of physiology to pioneer the study of ultrafast reactions in human biology, died of heart failure Nov. 16 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He was 97.
