Endangered native species on San Clemente Island clung to life until restoration began two decades ago. The turnaround is dramatic. SAN CLEMENTE ISLAND — The unique wildlife of San Clemente Island has survived the appetites and hooves of feral livestock, bombardments by Navy vessels and wave after wave of amphibious assault vehicles storming local beaches and grassy plateaus.
