Nectar production in Lima beans depends on light quality

Plants produce nectar to attract insect pollinators. Some plant species also secrete nectar to attract ants which in turn fend off herbivores. Scientists now have discovered that the production of the extrafloral nectar is light dependent. The plants were able not only to distinguish between day and night, but also to adapt their nectar secretion to current light conditions by using their special photoreceptor, the phytochrome.
