1970s technology solution to internet 'capacity crunch'

Exactly 50 years ago, Noble prize winner Charles Kao and his colleagues demonstrated the feasibility of using fiber optical cables to transmit information over long distance. Now researchers say that this laser-based technique, first proposed in the 1970s, can be used to counter an internet 'capacity crunch.'
