Alpha-lipoic acid prevents kidney stones in mouse model of rare genetic disease

Alpha-lipoic acid, a dietary supplement widely available to consumers, prevented stone formation in a mouse model of cystinuria, a rare inherited disease that causes recurrent formation of painful and damaging kidney stones. This research has led to the initiation of a clinical trial in patients suffering from the condition.
