A Few Thoughts On Sexist Bacteria

(Update: This post was originally titled "A few thoughts on feminist bacteria", a title I -- rather carelessly -- intended as a joke; there is no single convenient taxonomic classification for these bacteria, and the technical name is cumbersome, so I chose something that seemed deliberately ironic. I see from the comments, however, that clearly some readers thought I meant this in a sexist sense, which grieves me a little because I am -- and have always been -- committed to absolute equality, and because I realize that our society and others in some parts of the world unfortunately still discriminates against women in various ways, some subtle, others less so. read more
