Experimenting On Chimpanzees
In the past few decades, it has become ever clearer that chimpanzees are a lot like us. Recent research on animal emotion has only strengthened this sentiment. As such, there has been an increase in people who question whether or not it is ethical to use our close evolutionary cousins for scientific experiments. Since 1999, no experiments using great apes have been performed in the EU, which has banned research on them since last year, except when it’s a matter of national security. Only in the U.S. and Gabon experiments on great apes are explicitly allowed.Due to the increasing pressure to rethink this, the Institute of Medicine has produced a report in which it establishes a set of criteria for an experiment on chimpanzees to receive federal funding.
