Statins found to prevent arterial inflammation, heart attacks

The drugs, currently used to lower cholesterol, could also reduce risk for those with normal levels, researchers say. Costs and side effects would have to be weighed. Cholesterol-lowering statins can also reduce inflammation that causes heart disease and have the potential to prevent tens of thousands of heart attacks each year in patients with normal cholesterol levels, researchers reported Sunday.
