Officials urge WHO to change swine flu alert criteria

Some say raising the level should be based on the virus' severity, not just transmission. The agency is nearing decisions on raising the alert to its highest stage, and manufacturing an H1N1 vaccine. As the World Health Organization inched closer today to raising the infectious disease alert level to its highest stage -- and to a decision on whether to manufacture a vaccine against the novel H1N1 influenza virus -- delegates to the WHO congress in Geneva urged the agency to change its criteria for increasing the alert level.
