Lab and University Team 3D Prints Metamaterial That Shrinks When Heated

Monday, October 24, 2016 - 14:01 in Physics & Chemistry

Members of Lawrence Livermore National Lab's Additive Manufacturing Initiative are among a group of researchers who have developed 3D printed metamaterials with a unique property--instead of expanding when heated, they shrink. Possible applications for these materials could come in securing parts that tend to move out of alignment under varying heat loads, including microchips and high precision optical mounts.
