A research team from Italy assessed the possible effect of different prophylactic strategies in the prevention of venous thrombosis in a large series of cirrhotic patients who underwent hepatic resection for hepatocellular carcinoma. They suggest that prophylaxis is safe in cirrhotic patients without esophageal varices; the real need for prophylaxis should be better assessed.
