Tiny 'racetracks' show how bacteria get organized

A new study helps explain the collective dynamics that emerge when bacteria are confined to tight spaces. According to the scientists, when bacteria are confined in millimeter-sized, fluid-filled oval "racetracks," they quickly organize themselves into a clear collective motion. But instead of all traveling in one direction, individual bacteria along the outside of the track go one way, while those in the middle go the other.
