Even from a relatively young age, children use gestures to draw attention to an object. These so-called deictic gestures are usually first shown between nine and twelve months of age, before the development of speech. This type of gestures are thought to require a fairly developed intelligence and are believed to be important in the development of speech and symbol use. read more
