The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, one of the premier research institutes on the planet, will take the helm of the Deepsea Challenger. WHOI plans to incorporate the custom-built sub's technology into its existing submersibles and future research platforms. Last March, Cameron made a solo dive to 35,787 feet in the Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench, the deepest spot on Earth.
