Scientists have begun to unravel the genetic basis of deadly thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections (TAAD). The research identifies rare TAAD-associated mutations in genes that regulate the function of smooth muscle in the walls of large blood vessels. The finding may lead to the development of a screening procedure that could assess disease risk.
