Reducing HIV transmission risk: Study comparing tenofovir gel and oral tablet finds gel provides more drug to tissue

In the first head-to-head study of tenofovir gel and oral tenofovir -- two promising approaches for preventing HIV in women -- researchers found daily use of the vaginal gel achieved a more than 100-times higher concentration of active drug in vaginal tissue than did the oral tablet. Most of the US women in the study preferred the tablet, and while the African women favored both equally, many of them said the gel enhanced sexual pleasure.
