Antibiotic Resistance Genes Found From The 14th Century - Long Before Antibiotics Were Used In Medicine

We tend to think of antibiotic resistance as a product of modern medicine and the mutation ability of pesky viruses to get around dying. Writing in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, a team of investigators say they have discovered viruses containing genes for antibiotic resistance in a fossilized fecal sample from 14th century Belgium, long before antibiotics were used in medicine.  read more
